Recalls: Suzuki GY SX4
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Suzuki GY SX4
Suzuki GY SX4: door mirrors could vibrate
In November 2010, a recall was issued for Suzuki GY SX4 vehicles due to the absence of pre-coated adhesive (thread lock) on three screws on the outside of each external rear view mirror base. As a result, the screws could work loose and cause vibration of the mirror itself (PRA 2010/12114). The recalled vehicles had VINs in the following ranges:
- JSAGYA41S00110004 to JSAGYA41S00201588;
- JSAGYC41S00100015 to JSAGYC41S00201097; and,
- JSAGYC51S00300003.
Suzuki GY SX4: engine may stall and not restart
In November 2013, a recall was issued for Suzuki SX4 vehicles with automatic or continuously variable transmissions. In these vehicles, the bolts which fastened the drive plate to the torque converter may become loose or detach. This could lead to an abnormal noise or, at worst, the detached bolts could lodge in the drive plate cylinder block area – if this occurred, the engine may stall and not restart (PRA 2013/13831, PRA 2013/13845).
2012-14 Suzuki SX4: restricted speed and acceleration due to CVT controller
In May 2018, a recall was issued for Suzuki SX4 vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 19 July 2012 to 28 August 2014. Due to a manufacturing error, the soldered portion of a resistor mounted on the circuit board inside the CVT controller could develop a crack. If this occurred, the CVT controller may not regulate oil pressure properly – this could restrict vehicle speed and impair acceleration. 2007-11 Suzuki SX4: airbag warning light stays on and DTC B1312
In 2012, Suzuki USA issued Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) TS 02 0522R1 for 2007-11 Suzuki SX4 vehicles. In these vehicles, repeated flexing could cause an electric circuit disconnection (i.e. an open circuit) in the Front Passenger Sensing System (FPSS) circuit within the sensor-mat that was in the passenger seat bottom cushion assembly.
The primary symptom of this problem was that the ‘airbag’ warning light in the instrument cluster would illuminate, while diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1312 would also be stored in the vehicle’s on-board system. Furthermore, the ‘passenger air bag off’ indicator light would remain off because the front passenger airbag would remain active during this malfunction even when a child or infant was sitting in the front seat. Other than the FPSS, the airbag system would continue to operate as designed.
To fix, the passenger seat bottom cushion assembly was to be replaced. As part of a service campaign, Suzuki USA extended its coverage for passenger seat sensor mat failures for the B1312 DTC condition to 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,121 kilometres).
2009-10 Suzuki SX4: rear view door mirror may detach
In 2010, Suzuki UK issued a ‘non-code action’ for Suzuki SX4 vehicles because the rear view door mirror could detach (NCA/2010/026). It is understood that affected Suzuki SX4 vehicles were manufactured from 22 June 2009 to 19 January 2010.
Suzuki GY SX4: other problems and faults
- The air conditioning may stop working because the electromagnet for the compressor clutch fails.
- Clicking noises from the front suspension when accelerating from rest may be due to a lack of grease at the CV joint flange.
- For early Suzuki SX4 models, the engine may stall immediately after a cold start and, upon restarting, the ‘check engine’ light may illuminate – this problem may be fixed by updating the software.
