Recalls: Chrysler RT Grand Voyager
Overview
Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.
Recalls: Chrysler RT Grand Voyager
2008-09 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: sliding door wiring harness
In October 2010, a recall was issued for 2008 to 2009 year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, the right and/or left power sliding door wiring harness may chafe on the sliding door hinge when operating – this could cause the sliding door latch to overheat and malfunction (PRA 2010/12928).
2010 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: engine may shut down unexpectedly
In July 2011, a recall was issued for 2010 model year Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles. For these vehicles, if the FOBIK (keyless entry unit) was not fully seated in the ‘ON’ position, it could inadvertently move to the ‘accessory’ mode. Under certain driving conditions such as bumpy roads, this defect could cause an unintended engine shut off and pose a hazard to the driver and other road users (PRA 2011/12924). In June 2015, this recall was superseded by PRA 2015/14740, described below.
2011 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: non-compliant brake pads
In November 2011, a recall was issued for 2011 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles due to the potential fitting of non-compliant brake pads. As a result, the brakes pads may be less efficacious and increase the risk of an accident (PRA 2011/12923).
2008 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module
In March 2012, a recall was issued for 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager models due to the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORS) module potentially becoming contaminated by water leaking from the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) drain grommet – this could cause the airbag warning light to illuminate and/or inadvertent airbag deployment (PRA 2012/13045).
2012 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: liftgate pinch sensor
In May 2012, a recall was issued for three (3) Grand Voyagers that were available for sale in March 2012. In these vehicles, the right side power liftgate pinch sensor may not function as intended, resulting in greater force being required to stop the power liftgate during the final closing stages. Failure of the power liftgate could cause injury if persons were to place their hands in the liftgate opening. The recalled vehicles had the following VINs: 2C4RC1F57CR273809, 2C4RC1F55CR273825 and 2C4RC1F57CR287726 (PRA 2012/13139).
Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: curtain airbags may not deploy
In August 2013, a recall was issued for one-hundred and sixty-four (164) Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, a software error in the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module could prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying, thereby increasing the risk of injury to occupants (PRA 2013/13705).
2013-14 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: weight certification label
In October 2014, a recall was issued for RT Grand Voyager vehicles that were manufactured from 21 August 2013 to 26 June 2014. In these vehicles, the weight certification label had the incorrect value for Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR). Without understanding the correct GVWR specification, the owner may overload the vehicle and compromise the vehicle’s handling. To implement the recall, Chrysler would notify owners to take their vehicle to a dealership and have the weight certification label replaced (PRA 2014/14395).
2008-10 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: engine may shut down unexpectedly
In June 2015, a recall was issued for 2008 to 2010 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. In these vehicles, the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module may have unintentional movement of the Frequency Operated Button Ignition Key (FOBIK) from the ‘On’ to the ‘Accessory’ position while driving – this could cause the engine to shut down unexpectedly, posing an accident hazard to the driver and other road users (PRA 2015/14740). Please note that this recall superseded the recall which was issued in July 2011 and described above (PRA 2011/12924).
2008-09 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module
In March 2016, a recall was issued for 2008-09 Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles because the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module may malfunction due to corrosion of the power supply integrated circuit. If this occurred, the airbag warning lamp may illuminate and the airbag may not deploy in a collision, or the airbag may deploy inadvertently – both of these conditions increased the risk of injury to the front occupants of the vehicle (PRA 2016/15237).
2008-10 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: driver airbag emblem
In October 2020, recall campaign W09 was issued for 2008-10 model year Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles. These vehicles may have a loose or detached driver airbag emblem, and/or loose emblem retainers within the driver airbag module assembly. In the event of airbag deployment, a loose or detached emblem could become a projectile that is propelled towards vehicle occupants and causes serious injury. Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: difficulty re-fuelling
In September 2009, Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 14-001-09 REV A was issued for 2008-09 Chrysler RT Grand Voyager vehicles with petrol engines. For these vehicles, the owner may experience difficulties when re-fuelling or the fuel pump nozzle may shut off repeatedly during re-fuelling. For these vehicles, the TSB described a diagnosis procedure which may identify the source of the problem as:
- The fuel filler tube;
- The vapour recirculation tube;
- The fuel tank itself;
- A blockage in the EVAP canister, ESIM, clean air hose or filter; or,
- The control valve to the EVAP canister tube.
Chrysler RT Grand Voyager: Problems and faults
- Disconnecting or reconnecting the battery without first removing the radio fuse could cause damage to the MyGig audio system due to voltage spikes.
- A clunking noise from the rear when going over bumps or when turning may be due to the exhaust resonator hitting the vehicle – this can be fixed by installing updated exhaust hangers.
- The power adjustable third row of seats may begin to move from its stowed position, stop before the seatback is upright and then cease working – this was usually due to an object interfering with the position sensors.
- For early models, the MyGIG audio system could cease working properly; this was rectified with a software update.
- When the rear lift-gate is closed, the switch wires may short-circuit; – this may cause audible warnings to be heard and the ‘liftgate ajar’ light to illuminate.
